Biography

Steve Commichau was born and lived for most of his life in Berlin, Germany, before moving to Canada for a PhD project. He joined the department at the beginning of 2026. His research interests include medieval- and early modern studies, monstrosity, and gender- and queer studies. After studying in Postdam and Berlin, Germany, his 2025 dissertation at UBC Vancouver examined reports of hauntings in early modern German-speaking lands with an emphasis on the ghost as both a medium and a media event, and on questions of embodiment, gender, and social positionality in encounters with the undead. His most German qualities include baking bread and decrying the subpar quality of North American chocolate.

His instruction includes classes on beginners- and advanced German, Fascism, and monstrosity in German film.
